Vatican launches ‘eRosary’ bracelet to appeal to youth

The Vatican is looking to encourage young people who are keen on technology to pray by launching an “eRosary” bracelet.

Promoted as a combination of “the best of the Church’s spiritual tradition and the latest advances of the technological world,” the bracelet was launched by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network on 15 October.

October has been designated as an Extraordinary Missionary Month.

The Click To Pray “eRosary” bracelet is seeking to encourage young people to engage with a traditional Catholic prayer. It also aims to help them to contemplate the Gospel.

The bracelet consists of ten consecutive black agate and hematite rosary beads, as well as a smart cross which stores technological data connected to an app.

When activated, the user can choose either to pray the standard rosary, a contemplative rosary or different kinds of thematic rosaries.

The gadget can be worn as a bracelet and is activated by making the sign of the cross.

Fr. Frédéric Fornos SJ, the International Director of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, explained the benefits of using the bracelet as a prayer for peace.

“In a world of indifference and in the face of so many injustices, poverty, elementary rights denied, praying for peace in the world means reconciling ourselves in our daily relationships, with the poorest, with the stranger, with different cultures and spiritual and religious traditions, but also with our land, our forests, our rivers and oceans,” he said.

Fr. Fornos also spoke of the benefits of praying the rosary.

“The rosary is a beautiful spiritual tradition for contemplating the Gospel with Mary,” he said.

“It is a simple and humble prayer.”

Scottish Catholic filmmakers Sancta Familia Media, who use the media and technology to communicate the Catholic faith, are unimpressed with the cost of the new bracelet-$109 (£85).

“Nice idea, not nice price,” they said. “We’ll stick with the traditional set.”
