When we started this magazine back in 1984 we launched it out of a sense of real urgency that a counter-commentary was needed to the dominant obsessions with demolition and renewal; many of the early projects we featured remain groundbreaking, and were certainly counter-cultural at the time. Thankfully, contemporary architecture now presents a far more mature and practical dialogue on the preservation of our past, and its contribution to future landscapes. Over the past decades we’ve been privileged to report on some truly remarkable and historically important works, as well as a whole legion of smaller, but no less significant, projects that have contributed profoundly to preserving our built heritage and landscape. This magazine too, has changed with the times, and now represents a well-established and authoritative record of the very best in ecclesiastical and heritage architecture, and related building practices around the world.
