Pro-lifers gave me real choice, says mother who changed her mind on abortion

Monday, 13th August 2018

A mother has said that she changed her mind about terminating her pregnancy when pro-lifers outside an abortion clinic offered her help and a real choice.

Alina Dulgheriu, a member of the Be Here For Me campaign against abortion, recently lost a High Court appeal against the Ealing buffer zone.

Ms Dulgheriu, 34, said her mind was made up to end her pregnancy but walking past a vigil made her think again, and she wanted others to have the same opportunity to reconsider at the last moment.

“I made my choice to have an abortion because I didn’t have another solution,” she said.

“I was devastated because I could never have imagined having an abortion, but I couldn’t find the support I needed to continue my pregnancy.

“So I made my choice, but once I walked through that gate, there was a woman there saying, ‘we can offer you help’.

“Then I felt that I did have a choice. I can choose, yes or no. I chose not to go ahead with the abortion because I was given another option by the woman at the gate.”

Ms Dulgheriu said she has attended vigils with her daughter since she was two years old and denied there was any harassment or intimidation of staff or patients.

“There’s no harassment going on,” she said. “We are just three people holding a rosary and my daughter was playing.

“There’s nothing shocking or graphic on the leaflets.

“My daughter saw the picture of the developing baby on the leaflet and she said ‘Mummy, look – it’s a baby’, then she knelt down and kissed the picture.”

Ms Dulgheriu’s comments come as an announcement on abortion buffer zones is expected from Home Secretary Sajid Javid next month. Labour MP Rupa Huq is leading calls for national legislation following the model of the UK’s first abortion buffer zone in Ealing.
