Pro-life charity praises soap for sensitive take on miscarriage

A pro-life charity has praised Coronation Street for its storyline highlighting the issue of miscarriage.

Last week the ITV soap saw Michelle Connor, played by Kym Marsh, go into labour at 23 weeks into her pregnancy, which resulted in the death of her baby Ruairi at birth.

“The show must be commended for shining a light on an issue which is often in the dark,” Mark Bhagwandin of Life told The Universe. “At Life we counsel hundreds of people every year affected by pregnancy loss but there are thousands more who never receive the help they need and suffer in silence.

“We have to reach these parents by whatever means possible and TV shows which address pregnancy loss are helping to show bereaved parents that the issue affects many people; that they are not alone and it has to be talked about.”

Marsh, who lost her own son, Archie, in a similar way eight years ago, said that recreating a stillbirth on screen was the “best way to honour” him.

In the show Marsh’s character angrily questioned why Ruairi would not receive a birth certificate – the law currently states that birth certificates can only be issued after 23 weeks.

“I can fully understand Marsh’s pain when she says calling her son a late miscarriage got to her,” said Mr Bhagwandin. “We gave our baby a name, despite there being no birth certificate and I would absolutely recommend doing that.

“It has helped me to say to my other children who are now 21 and 20 that they have an older sister and her name is Gabriella.”
