Poldark helps us to sail the stormy seas of marriage

Sunday, 11th June 2017

Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield has told how the popular TV drama packed with turbulent affairs is meant to offer a guide to a “successful marriage”.

Based on the Cornish saga penned by Winston Graham in the 1940s, Aidan Turner plays the passionate Ross Poldark whose unlikely marriage to Demelza, played by Eleanor Tomlinson becomes marred by his dark temper and fixation with his former lover.

“I always bear in mind the advice Andrew Graham (son of Winston) gave me, which was that his father intended the Poldark saga to be a portrait of a successful marriage,” Horsfield said.

“By successful he didn’t mean perfect or idyllic, but real…by series three, the fact that they’re still together at all demonstrates staying power.”

Jenny Porter, Director of Client Services at Marriage Care, said the true key to success is to keep sight of your love and not give up in times of difficulty. She said: “I agree with the message. During the lifetime of a marriage it will be tested in many ways by all manner of things.

“The key to success is to work through these challenges to keep sight of your love for each other and not to give up when things get difficult.”

Season three of the BBC show will launch this evening, catching up with the characters in 1794 as the French Revolution brings a host of troubles to Truro.

Poldark returns tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
