Papal products flying off shelves ahead of WMOF visit
Pope Francis merchandise is flying off shelves in Ireland as the pontiff prepares to touch down in the country later this month.
Papal-branded products including t-shirts; flags; CDs; statues; plates; bunting; pens; key rings; mugs; lollipops; umbrellas; candles; bobble-heads and collapsible chairs are proving to be a huge hit with customers as shop owners are planning on ordering more stock ahead of the World Meeting of Families.
The Veritas shop on Abbey Street, Dublin, is well prepared for the huge demand as it had its papal-themed items commissioned months ago from Italy.
Turlough O’Brien, sales manager, said the products were selling “really well”.
“For us it’s a once in a generation event, so we’re really looking forward to it and it’s really starting to crank up in terms of sales,” he told The Irish Sun.
One of the more quirky pieces of papal paraphernalia the shop is offering is a collapsible cardboard chair, which is available both online and in-store for the price of €18.95.
While anyone can buy the white chair, which includes a picture of the pope’s face along with World Meeting of Families logo, it is predominantly being marketed to those who will be attending the papal Mass at Phoenix Park on Sunday 26th August.
“I think people are going to turn up to Phoenix Park and not realise they’re going to have to stand there for 10 hours or whatever,” said Mr O’Brien.
