Nora Quoirin: Bishop extends “prayerful support” to family
A bishop from the Archdiocese of Southwark has released a statement offering prayers and support for Nora Quoirin and her family following the teenager’s death in Malaysia.
Auxiliary Bishop Pat Lynch said: “The Catholic community wishes to extend its prayerful support to Nora’s family in heartfelt love and compassion: we walk alongside them as they grieve her loss.”
“Our heartfelt prayers are for Nora and for her family at this difficult time.”
Nora was on holiday with her family when she disappeared from her room at the Dusun resort on 4 August.
After a search involving 350 people, a body discovered on Tuesday was confirmed to be that of the 15-year-old, who had special needs, from London.
The bishop’s statement referred to those who took part in the search, as well as school friends and parishioners at St Bede’s RC Church, where Nora’s family attend Mass.
“We also pray for the comfort of those who have been involved in the search for Nora, the parishioners of St Bede’s, Clapham Park, as well as school friends and staff,” he said.
Malaysian police said that Nora was discovered near the Dusun resort and was “not in any clothing.” They also said the cause of death has not yet been confirmed and that a post-mortem examination was under way.
Nora’s parents, Meabh and Sebastien, a French-Irish couple, paid tribute to their daughter.
“She has truly touched the whole world,” they said. “The cruelty of her being taken away is unbearable. Our hearts are broken.”
The statement ended with a prayer for Nora and those who knew her.
“We commend Nora to God’s tender care, asking him also to pour out peace, consolation and healing on those that mourn her this day,” Bishop Lynch said.
“We respectfully ask that the family and friends of Nora are granted privacy at this time.”
Father Marcus Holden, parish priest at St Bede’s church, announced a vigil of prayer and reflection on Wednesday at 8pm. A public Mass for Nora will take place on Thursday at 8pm at St Bede’s.
