Ethos Media assist Disney in spreading the spiritual message of their latest film, Queen of Katwe
Ethos Media has created resources, including an official Viewer’s Guide, to enable the Church to help people engage with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural themes raised by Disney’s latest film, Queen of Katwe.
Disney’s Queen of Katwe, which is released in UK cinemas today, tells the vibrant true story of Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), a young girl from the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda. When she meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a football player now working in Christian ministry – coaching football and teaching children to play chess – she finds the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream.
“Disney’s Queen of Katwe is a story of hope. It shows the power of combining the talents, hard work and determination of those currently trapped in poverty, with the right encouragement, advocacy and support from those seeking to help them fulfil their potential,” said Nick Pollard, co-founder of EthosMedia.org, who were commissioned to create the resources by Disney. “Phiona’s particular story of success through chess is exceptional, but the principle is universal: enabling people to develop and use their talents can achieve great things.”
Jane Riley, Community and Partnerships Manager at Traidcraft who, together with ActionAid and Christian Aid, are partnering with Ethos Media in encouraging people to engage with the themes explored in the film said: “Research has shown that increases in women’s income correlates with improved outcomes, through greater expenditure on family welfare, nutrition and girls’ education, than similar increases in men’s income.”
As well as an official Viewer’s Guide, the free resources, available at EthosMedia.org/QueenOfKatwe, include a short discussion-starter video featuring singer/songwriter Alicia Keys who describes Phiona as “the rose through the concrete” and comments that “when women are empowered, the world changes”.
This discussion-starter video, which comes with its own short Leader’s Guide, is published under the new Take-One.TV brand which Nick and Carol Pollard, co-founders of Ethos, have developed for school tutor periods, but is also ideal for a range of Church and community group settings.
