We’re coming home to say no, roar UK’s Irish diaspora
Pro-life group London-Irish United For Life has launched a campaign to encourage eligible Irish citizens living in the UK to go ‘Home to Vote No’ in Ireland’s forthcoming constitutional referendum on abortion on 25th May.
The 8th Amendment to the Irish Constitution recognises the right to life of the unborn child, and protects that right, along with the equal right to life of the mother.
London-Irish United For Life is also encouraging Irish people in Britain to travel home to vote ‘No’. Irish citizens abroad can visit checktheregister.ie and citizensinformation.ie to see if they are eligible to vote. They also encourage people who are not eligible to vote to speak to family and friends in Ireland and urge them to vote ‘No’.
Seáinín Mac Brádaigh said: “As an expat who absolutely 100% intends on returning to Ireland in the near future, I think that going home to vote is a duty because it says to the world this is the kind of society I come from and it will inform the kind of society I will return to.”
Karen Ní Loideáin also strongly encouraged all Irish emigrants to go home to vote. “It’s the right to life we are voting on,” she said. “There have been over eight million abortions in the UK since 1967. Is this the road we want Ireland to go down?
“Everyone deserves a chance at life, not just the perfect, the planned or the privileged. That’s why I’m going home to vote No.”
Suzanne Conway said this is “one of the most important referenda that our country will have and a chance for us to have our say in an issue that has huge influence on society.”
She insisted that those who may have moved away from Ireland still have an obligation to defend human life – especially the most vulnerable.
“Voting to retain the amendment that protects the unborn individual’s life is something that we should be proud of.”
London Irish United For Life will be taking part in the March for Life UK in London on 5th May to promote its ‘Home to Vote No’ message. See www.facebook.com/LdnIrishU4L/
