Church donates £15,000 to Hospice UK’s Covid-19 appeal

The Day for Life fund of the Catholic Church in England and Wales has made a donation of £15,000 to Hospice UK’s Covid-19 appeal.

Hospice UK’s emergency appeal is raising funds to ensure that hospice nurses and frontline staff have the equipment and tools they need to work safely. They are also working to ensure hospices can offer bereavement and emotional support to the staff, patients and families affected during these traumatic times; and that the hospice sector is able to adapt to change and remain sustainable over the long term.

Bishop John Sherrington, Lead Bishop for Life Issues in England and Wales, said: “Hospices play a really important part in local communities, providing care for those who are dying and invaluable support for their families and friends.

“Hospices, at this time, are in desperate need of resources. This donation can help provide personal protective equipment for those who work there and so ensure the continuation of care and support for those who are dying at this time of crisis.

“The Day for Life fund seeks to help projects that support life from its very beginning until its end, and so it’s most appropriate at this time that we’re able to help Hospice UK and provide them with this important resource for the good of all in their care.

“Thank you to all who are working in our hospices for the care that you give to those who are dying.”

Day for Life is celebrated yearly by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The proceeds of the Day for Life collection held in parishes are used for the promotion of the dignity of the human person through the distribution of grants.
