Celtic’s founding Brother in beautiful tribute
A limited edition boxed set commemorating the life of the Irish Marist Brother who founded Celtic Football Club is available for purchase.
The set, celebrating the life of Br Walfrid, the founding father of the Hoops, has been produced on behalf of Glasgow arts group The Nine Muses, which owns both brotherwalfridart. co.uk and the 5×4 footoriginal oil painting which sits at the altar of St Mary’s Church, the second oldest church in the Archdiocese of Glasgow.
It was at the school attached to St Mary’s Church, where Br Walfrid spent 1869 to 1874 working as a teacher, that he set up a football team in 1887 to raise money for the ‘penny dinners’ which fed children in his care.
That team went on to become Celtic FC, the first British football team to win the European Cup.
“The legacy and influence of Br Walfrid is still very much felt in Glasgow,” a spokesman for the archdiocese of Glasgow told The Universe. “The link with St Mary’s is very evident today – the Marist’s picture hangs in the Church and his statue stands outside the stadium just a few hundred yards away.”
The boxed set – limited to 1,888 copies, to reflect the year Celtic FC played its first match – comprises a 60-minute documentary on the life of Br Walfrid, narrated by actor Peter Mullan and directed by BAFTA winner Paul Hineman, as well as an A3 numbered print depiction of Br Walfrid by top Scots artist Peter Howson.
The beautiful collection comes in a 3D embossed, matt laminated luxury presentation box and displays a reproduction of Howson’s Br Walfrid.
Scottish print finishing company ACA has applied its unique expertise to bring a luxury finish to the boxed set.
Joe Keenan, ACA’s Managing Director, said: “Our work has resulted, we believe, in the presentation box being as much a work of art as the painting itself. Our foil embossing and multilayer varnishing expertise takes the Br Walfrid presentation box from being simply a good product to becoming an exceptional one.
The Peter Howson ‘Brother Walfrid’ Limited Edition Boxed Set is available from brotherwalfridart.co.uk priced £600.
