More bones found at Vatican embassy

More bones have been found on the grounds of the Vatican embassy in Italy, adding grisly new evidence to the growing mystery over who was buried on Holy See territory and why.

As police returned to the compound on Tuesday, coroner Giovanni Arcudi said preliminary examinations of bones found last week indicated they belonged to a woman probably in her thirties, “not an adolescent”.

Italian media previously surmised that the bones could be those of Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee who presumably was kidnapped in 1983 at the age of 15. The case has never been solved but has been the subject of speculation for more than 35 years.

Despite the age of the bones, Orlandi family lawyer Laura Sgro told the ANSA news agency her clients are waiting for DNA results.
